RSC in purple.

I took a little time and cut out and sewed up a purple house today. I plan to head back into the sewing room this afternoon and add more houses to the collection. I hope to also press and trim the graduation quilt. Linking up with the RSC.

I had 2 weeks up in Vermont with Mom and returned home Wednesday evening. Thursday was all about errands, visiting Tom and doing bloodwork and picking up scripts.
Friday after work I did a bit of a deep clean in the master bathroom. It still needs a little work but much better after being gone most of the last 3 months. The cat litters and food and water are in there. I'll finish up in there today and work on the master bedroom today. The floor needs a vacuum and a steam clean.
Friday night - I volunteered as a chaperone with the band for the Football game. I just helped out a bit here and there and probably lifted a few too many things with loading the truck for the concession stand and getting the water containers into the stands for the kids to get refills from. We did get a bit of rain, of course right at halftime!

The sky had some beautiful shades with the sunset with lots of angry rain clouds. Thankfully the rain stopped and the game was able to continue fine with no thunder in the area.

The rose bush by the shed is in bloom with this beautiful peachy pink flower.

Last night, I noticed Emily was parked in her spot which was way across the parking lot and it was dark. I parked there until she got into the car and it started. I headed home, and she called not 1 minute away (I was wondering why she didn't back up and leave). The battery light was on. We tried a few things and then I figured I'd just follow her home. We got home safely around 11PM. This morning, battery light still on so Greg checked it. I did not know there is water in the battery! It was pretty empty, so he filled it up. Nope, still got the light on after letting it run for 20 minutes. So, they get to deal with that this afternoon. I'll grab a few groceries and spend the rest of the time sewing!

RSC in yellow

I have missed a bunch of the RSC this summer with too much travel. I did manage to get a couple of yellow houses added to the collection this week and added another teal house that was under construction delay and got approval for finishing this week. I think I was doing 6 of each color, so need to add four more of each to the pile before the end of the month.

Lots of progress has been made on the cross stitch. Do you notice when you are getting close to the end of something, it becomes the only thing you want to work on until it is done? No? Just me?

I took this one using the 3x lens on my phone. Google suggested indirect light and a 3x or 5x to limit the distortion of the fabric.

Emily had senior sunrise breakfast at school today and a marching practice after school. The football game is away and far away so they are working their routine instead. Dinner will be egg roll in a bowl. Different from the southwest egg rolls earlier this week. This one is just hot Italian sausage, cabbage and some garlic and soy sauce. Quick and easy. I got a huge head of cabbage a couple weeks ago at the farmers market I need to finish up. This will be a great usage for it as all 3 of us like this one.

Linking up Saturday with the RSC. Who knows, I might add a few houses tonight.

Weekend wrap up

Friday on my morning walk with Bear the dog, we got to see 4 deer! I think I was able to get 3 of the 4 in this photo. I had the leash in one hand, so the shot was not great.

For the RSC, I was able to add one teal house to the pile. I plan to add a few more later tonight and maybe a chicken or two! Linking up with the RSC.

I did get into the sewing room on Thursday and figured out I had the Graduation quilt bear paws into diagonal rows, but they needed their side triangles added. Then they got sewn into a top. Did I mention I absolutely hate sewing those long seams? I added the four corners today.
It needs a press and to determine a border or not. I believe it is 80x80 now so might want a little plain border all around. It might just be a slightly darker cream to make it bigger as it will shrink a bit in the quilting. I'll let the boy decide though as it is his quilt. I'll have to find a backing and batting for hand quilting, and put it onto the frame. Someone will have to wait a bit for it but, that is what he wants. The crazy summer delayed it a bit (doubt I would have hit the deadline anyway!). We will see how long it takes. I see a green binding to finish it off.... or maybe the blue? I think I have enough of a couple of fabrics so we will see what happens when I need a binding.

I've been doing a lot of counted cross stitch and I've managed to distort my fabric, so it is horrible in photo's. I've tried spritzing it with water and pressing it. Nothing seems to work. So, here is where I am at this point. I'll work on the pumpkin in the lower left tonight, I think. This will be taken with me for plane work (yup - travelling again but this one was scheduled!Flights 12+13 for me since June 3) up to Vermont. The kids and hubby are going with me this time. We have our house/animal sitter in place again. Linking up with Kathy and the Slow Sunday stitchers.

Rsc in orange

I added a couple of houses to the collection this week. The spider web house just makes me smile.

That means the chicken blocks are next.
Both kids have things to do today - one has a graduation party at a friends house and the other is having a study date to review for their AICE exams next week. The silly girl had her Math exam yesterday and came home smiling and said that was really easy. I reminded her that was the one her brother struggled with. Her words 'I read problem one, thought oh, that's easy', and repeat through the exam. Next week is her Chemistry, Physics, History and English. She said Global Perspectives and Math are done. I know Aidan has his Calculus exam Thursday and he has a couple more as well. His last day of school is technically Tuesday with Graduation Saturday. He has 2 more exams Thursday and one in June.

Seems there was a manufacturing backlog of the Progesterone pill nationwide. Mine ran out this week and it was out of stock everywhere. I was surprised I got a text that it was finally in at Publix last night. I scooted right over and picked it up. I ran out earlier this week. I slept pretty good last night! Might have been because I was very tired from siblings text messages from the previous night. My Dad has a mild heart attack early Friday morning. He is at the hospital and under observation and doing well. The four siblings were handling things and helping my Mom. I'll call today and see how they are doing.

A little progress in the sewing room

I was able to finish another 2 bear paw blocks for Aidan's graduation quilt. I need to make a bunch more. I'll try and prep another 2 blocks tonight to sew up this weekend. He chose civil war style greens and blues with a darker creamy background. Each block is 14 inches finished, so I need to figure out how many I need. I'm thinking 30+ for a double bed size and this makes 12 I think. I'll start having to reuse fabrics after the next 2 blocks. I kinda went crazy when a site was closing down last year with all their fabrics like this.

While sewing the above I added a couple of orange houses. I'll add the last two when I do another set of bear paws.

I pinned this RSC quilt of Bird in the Air blocks that was sitting on my frame and not moving with any progress. It is now being machine quilted and I'm less than half way done on this 90x90 quilt. I like to think I learned my lesson and am taking breaks and not doing it all in one go this time. I should have pinned it better, I was so used to warm and natural batting that doesn't need much pinning to this Tuscany Wool that needed more. I'm doing a squiggle walking foot stitch every 3 inches or so down the quilt.  I'll work some more on this one this weekend. It is a lot of fun to see some old favorites of my fabrics pop up as I am sewing.

I'm going to try canning beans tomorrow. I have a pressure canner and have a 32 ounce bag of black beans and Great Northern beans. I'm going to soak them overnight in a couple of pans, boil for a bit in the morning and then pack them into pint jars and see how it goes with pressure canning. They should be done well before the time we leave for the Band Banquet at the school in the evening. Greg found a few boxes of mason jars in the shed when he was clearing out. I'll get them cleaned and run through the dishwasher tonight. I believe the boy is late today, with his Academic Club Banquet.

Rsc in orange

I snapped this squirrel on my walk with Bear yesterday. I might have taken the day off in support of the May Day protest here in the US.

I did a little sewing and got a couple of Bear Paw blocks added to the Graduation quilt pile. In between I added this orange house block for the RSC.

I was tapped to drive Greg to his MRI on his back Friday and got some hexagons stitched in the car while I waited for him. We had cooked dinner that morning, so the ribs just needed warming and broiling to finish them off. We use the Alton Brown Baby Back rib recipe. An actual dinner at the table with all of us happened, which is unusual with the kids schedules. It was fun to hear about school, teachers and the happenings over the last week. School sure is different from when I went, as they know an awful lot about their teachers and their lives!

Today is the Winter guard fun show about 35 minutes away from us. Grandma is coming up to attend that one with me. We have much needed rain predicted this afternoon. Aidan has an F1 sprint race and qualifying later today (Miami race) and they are getting the rain tomorrow, so the race will be interesting. Sunday, I'm helping set up a Tea Party event in the morning for Girl Scouts. I've helped with the setup the last few years and get the tables and chairs out and set up for just under 200 people with a few other volunteers. Then do the tablecloths, silverware and tea cups and saucers with paper plates. Sunday night I'll be watching the Lightning/Canadians game 7 of the First round of the Stanley Cup. My guys finally played well last night and scored in overtime to keep the series alive.
Head on over to the link up and see what pretty oranges have come out to play this month.

Rsc houses

These are the last two pink houses for the month. Notice the dinosaur peeking out the window?

We won't mention that I sewed the house top on wrong... three times before it came out correctly. I might have left them after the first try for lunch.... then managed to sew them wrong again two more times before I got it right. Thankfully it is a 6 inch block so the seams that kept being pulled out were not too big.

I've been enjoying the low humidity in Florida and cooler temps for April (unusual) and stitching out on the back porch in my new chairs in the afternoon for a bit after work. The dog is not happy with me. Seems he can't fit in the chair with me and is not happy with that fact. I tried putting his quilt onto the other rocking chair and patted the chair for him to jump up. He disliked his quilt being outside the living room and tried to pull it off the chair to put it back where it belongs! I thought it was funny. My dog does not like a change in his routine... and it was sit in the recliner with Mom while she cross stitches time!

Rsc in pink

I'm posting late but wanted to get the errands done in the morning thinking the crowds would be less. We are having a non-traditional Easter lunch tomorrow. Emily has a birthday Tuesday (17 years old!) and neither kid is keen on ham, so I let Emily choose the menu. She went with steaks on the grill, baked potato, prosciutto wrapped asparagus and grilled veggies. I picked up some mini croissants to go with it. Emily and Grandma did their birthday shop and lunch today. The girl is very busy next week with All County band rehearsals and a concert on Thursday evening.

I got some afternoon sewing in and added these four pink houses to the collection. I think I need two more, but my pinks are a bit lacking in variety. I did pull a couple of 2 inch strips from a drawer for two of these houses. I'll dig around in there and see if I can find a couple more. I cut out more roof and chimney parts and have two more of those ready to add to the last two pink houses. Linking up with the RSC.

This week the boy was up in Tallahassee for a Skills USA competition. He and Issiac were a team in the 3D printing category (I can't remember the actual technical name). Their task was to design and print a catapult or trebuchets that would propel a Lego man and was rated on distance and accuracy. They had to have all parts 3-D printed and brought with them. Then do a presentation with tech specs on how they chose, designed, worked through issues and got to their final result. They took home 1st place and will be headed to Nationals in Atlanta in June. These two have been friends since Middle school and were on a Robotics team together in 8th grade. I have a feeling they are going to have a blast up in Atlanta with the other 8-10 people headed there from their school.

RSC red houses

I was able to play a little in the sewing room this morning and finished off 4 houses so I have a set of six now to join the green and blue ones. I'll have to cut more chimney and roof parts so I am all set for next month's houses. Linking up with the RSC.

It feels strange to have nothing planned for the weekend. After a nice sleep in and a walk with Bear I enjoyed the puttering in the sewing room. I think I'll head back in after lunch and catch up on my Little House Sew along as I need to do block 3 still and I think block 4 is out as well now.

Next week has a National Honor Society induction (Emily) that Aidan has to lead as VP since the President has a game that night. It also is on the same day the Friends and Family presentation of the Winter Guard (not color guard this is more dance with the colorful flags, riffles and sabers) performances, since all competitions are at least an hour away. The final competition - FFCC Championships is next Saturday in Orlando and I'll be driving a bunch of the kids to the competition. The JV and Varsity teams are at different schools, about an hour apart but their time for performing and awards are spread apart so I think they can go to the others performance and awards. Just makes a very long day!
We had quite the wind gust at our house earlier this week that was in front of a cold front going through. We had 2 nights of freezing temps! In March in Florida! Unheard of.  It took the metal awning we have over my car for a whirl. Unfortunately, the metal bar scraped my driver's side door and pulled up the trim by the window on the drivers side. Hubby pulled it off and ordered a new one. Hopefully he will take the mirror off today and get the new trim piece on, so it won't leak with any rain. I can deal with the scrape later. They also need to put the new cover on the frame and put it back, right side up so I can park under it again and protect the paint on the car from the Florida sun. We don't have a workable garage.
Since the kids were off this week and Aidan needed an oil change on his car and mentioned the grinding sound on starting and I noticed brake issues - it went to Honda for service and a check. We had them do a bunch and then took it to Meineke for the brakes as their labor cost was loads less. A $21 part and $700 in labor was a bit ridiculous I thought from Honda. So, $5,300 later the car should be good for another 100K miles! It has 190K now. The AC is working again and an oil leak is fixed, the grinding sound on start is fixed and the belt got replaced with the break pads and routers and a rotate on the tires and the oil change of course. Things got cleaned out and everything is running smoothly again.
Time for a quick lunch then back to sewing. Maybe I'll prep a quilt for quilting this weekend as well. We will see.

Rsc houses in red

I was able to add a couple of red houses to the collection as well as the last two green houses I had cut out. I managed to cut more of the parts needed for the house tops and chimneys for the next batch, so those will get sewn as I am doing other things.
I need to find the chicken blocks and add see what I need to add to that collection and get back to the graduation bear paw prints. Since today is an at home day rather than in Tampa at the winter guard competition (sick kid), I get to relax and putter around the house. Hot weather arrived here in Florida, so I'll enjoy inside things.

Saturday RSC

This guy was waiting for his boy to get home last night. He went up to Gainesville with friends for dinner.... and to either celebrate or commiserate the UF acceptance postings. There was a bit of both  - mine got in, his buddies did not. They have a back up plan, so we will see how things shake out. Mine was very happy to get in as this was his 2nd choice after Dartmouth (which was a rejection letter in December).

The UFO progress without the dog! I hope to press and add the borders later tonight, if I'm not wiped out from volunteering at girl scout camp for a littles encampment today. Projected temps in the 80's and sunshine. Must bring my hat and sunblock!

A few more houses were added as I was piecing the border above. Six is a nice number I think.

I'm thankful to have one more Saturday in blue, as I'd like to really add a star 16 patch block or two and a chicken block or two. We will see how that goes next week.

RSC Houses

I got a few minutes this week and got to dig into the drawers of pre cuts.... to realize I have 2.5 and 1.5 but not really much 2 inch! Guess I'll need to remedy that as this house block from Bonnie Hunter (free patterns on her website) uses 2 inch strips. I'll be making a few more of these blocks today instead of heading to the guard competition in Orlando. It would have been a 15-16 hour day and I don't think I was up to it today. I did drop Em to school this morning for 8AM. Pick up is 11PMish. She had enough chaperones, so I didn't feel too bad backing out.

I also trimmed up all the blocks this week on the old UFO so they should be ready to sew into rows and a top today as well. My old book doesn't have the unfinished sizes listed of the blocks..... so I did some calculations and hopefully it is good. I started this back in the late 1990's... if you can believe that! The strips were cut and the nine patches were stitched. It was time to pull it out and dust it off.

Scrappy Houses is Finished!

Emily was disappointed I finished the binding so I told her she should go around and check my work and add some stitches if she see's any gaps..... and cut my extra threads if she see's any!

Peanut would not budge - so you get a cat on the quilt this morning.

Binding time =)

It was a successful day! Houses got quilted and a binding made and machine stitched on. Time to snuggle in and relax with some hand stitching.

This set of blocks from earlier this week...... which got trimmed and stitched together yesterday.....

is now at this stage with a red dot binding machine stitched to the top....... hey, there was lots of red in those chimneys and I didn't have enough brown for a binding. I even remembered to make a 10 inch square into a triangle and it got stitched into the bottom right hand corner as I was attaching the binding.

Playing with houses today.....

I 'found' those house blocks I made a few years ago while picking up the sewing room. Wednesday while on the phone with Mom - after working and before kid pickup/gymnastics/sams club run I pulled framing fabrics for the rest of the houses. I think I had about 15 of the 42 done before I started today.
Framing time..... uphill and downhills..... I think I finally figured them out! I used 3x11 for mine.

So nice to move along a project once in a while! These just need to get trimmed down and then sewn together into a top. I used the free pattern over at Quiltville - Scrappy Houses. I need to decide if I sash the houses or leave them like this..... thoughts?

I'll link this up Saturday with the RSC Challenge..... since I started the houses a few years ago with that challenge and there are lots of red chimneys!

RSC in blue.

Well, I opened one bin of scraps this afternoon.... but there sadly was not much blue in there. Must be in one of the other bins. (I have 3 large ones I am admitting to!)  I did have one 2.5 inch strip of a light/medium blue in there so I grabbed that to make one of the sew along blocks for this years RSC Challenge. I made 2 of the 3 - 10 inch blocks today. I found a stack of 5 inch floral prints on the shelf and decided to use a few of them up so they are in these two blocks and a 16 patch block. I have had that stack since the late 90's!

I had made a light 16 patch block earlier this week and the bow tie was a leader and ender today.

I made two more uphill houses earlier this week and cut out 2 downhill. I sewed the downhill ones today.... I think I am getting the hang of these! They need trimming but I'll do that once all the blocks are done.

The red dresden plate made progress and I got a bunch of the cross hatch done in the rainy day car line yesterday and finished it up this morning with a movie. I hope to add the X's in the blocks on the edge later tonight and then I can pull out the light blue one to work on.

This snowflake is not light blue.... but the quilt it goes with has lots of blues so I figured I'll work on this in January. I was pattern testing Hoarfrost for Joanne at Canuckquilter a while ago but never finished the 3 snowflakes. Her pattern has them paper pieced. It was my stopping point. I really do not like paper piecing.... so last week I was checking out snowflake coloring pages and found this one. I printed it out, cut out on the lines and then used that paper to trace this out onto some white fabric. We will see how it goes as it will be needle turned appliqué. I need to press it before attaching for hand work.

There was a knitted light blue variegated dish cloth made this week too but that didn't get a photo.

The boy was feeling off today - he is resting when he needs to- which is  a nice change from his usual self. We cancelled Grandpa since we don't want him to get sick. I did make a trip out to the store to stock up on soups for the pantry after lunch. It seems we were out of chicken noodle ones. The house also got swept, mopped and vacuumed (hubby actually helped with the vacuum) this morning. Hopefully the boy is better and both can go to Grandma's tomorrow. If so - I plan to spend the whole day in the sewing room! So many options of things to work on!  Blocks could be put together into tops, tops could get prepped for quilting, blocks could get made.... endless possibilities.

Linking up with the RSC Challenge and Oh Scrap. What are you working on today?

RSC 2018.... and no blue sewing yet you say?

How can that be? Blue is the largest part of my stash and my scraps and not a bit of blue sewing yet? Well, I'll let you in on a little secret. Come in closer. Closer..... I have way too many tops and collections of blocks in my sewing area.

There, I said it.

Deep breath.

I feel better now.

So, instead of being good and picking up the area and finding more things to distract me..... I just cleared off the sewing table and diligently worked on my spring blossoms quilt. You see - it got pinned, walking foot machine quilted and I made and attached a binding to the front this week. Don't tell the quilting police.... but I plan to hand quilt the blossoms.... after I finish the binding! I know, I am a rule breaker! I'm thinking I'll outline the color blossoms on the inside and then do what Joanne did with her machine in the middle sections since I like how that looked. So..... one project has officially moved out of the sewing area this week. I'm calling that a win. I made this last year with the RSC Challenge and the free pattern can be found here. It is a super fun quilt to make.

Since I had some time... I pulled out the wonky houses and looked up the directions for the uphill and down hill. I had one uphill and 3 downhill. I know when I cut them and sewed them a couple of years ago I cut out 2 of each. Might be why they got put into a pile and erased from the memory. I cut some fabric for 2 uphills today... and I actually got 2 uphill houses! Woo Hoo! These were made with the RSC Challenge a few years ago. Hey - one of the houses is blue, does that count?

I did see some blue this week though. I needed a change of pace after 2 days of hand quilting on my red dresden block last weekend (and a very sore fingertip) so have been knitting and made both of these this week.  Just need to tuck in the ends and they will go into the dish cloth rotation.

Linking up with the RSC Challenge on Saturday. I'll be with 150 girls at a cookie rally in the morning. Unfortunately - the location of the rally does not have heat... and it is going to be freezing overnight here in Florida again. It will be an interesting dress code... as most don't have winter gear so hopefully lots of layering and gloves and mittens will be happening. Stay warm everyone.

For now, I am going to cooking club tonight so I'd better get in a quick walk (and turn on the pool pump to low for overnight) and then make dinner for the hubby and kids. Have a great weekend.

Some Yellow Sunshine....

I got a little bit of sewing in on Sunday and have yet to see the sewing area since! Good thing I was successful.

Five sunny houses were added to the neighborhood. I guess it will be time to start adding the tilting frames to them next.

I have two more dresden plate blocks completed in yellow and black. The brown is added to the background so I just need to pull all the blues and browns and create the squares to border the last 4 blocks.

I think the birds in the air will be next on the list to create... but that will be for another day.  Hopefully with my new schedule I will get some sewing in cause I am really going to need the de-stressing that sewing provides me!  (Got to love when employees just stop showing up for work... I get to fill in at our store... and still work my part time programming job while juggling kids and their schedule - such fun! NOT! The next two weeks should be real fun with kids off school M+T, pumpkin patch with girl scouts Sunday and carving pumpkins on Monday night, soccer practice Tues, soccer games Thurs, bowling Sat, cub scouts Sat and my FIL is having eye surgery next Thursday so hubby will be with him for a couple of days while I cover his hours at the store Thurs/Fri. Thank goodness for Grandma to help out at the store and with the kids. )
On a brighter note - the rose bushes that were cut back to the stumps last month are all green and pink and in bloom out front.

It was finally cool enough for the kids to go out and ride bikes yesterday after homework was done! In the low 80's with a breeze and the humidity is gone hopefully, for the next 6 months! See the house being built next door - entertainment for the kids to see any work done while they are at school.

Other good news... Mom and Dad are coming down for a visit around Thanksgiving and will be here for my Dad's 80th birthday! So happy to be able to see them again this year.

Linking up Saturday morning with the RSC Challenge. Time to get ready for my bowling this Thursday morning and then I'm helping out in Emily's classroom for the last hour of school.

RSC Red.....

With a picked up sewing area, you would think I got some sewing in this week in red! Nope, but I do have some reds cut out to make some houses later today. You can see the UFO - grandmothers choice blocks are on the floor laid out to be sewed into a top. They were getting their sashes added to some blocks yesterday. The pink house is what those red strips will become.

A shot of all my houses this year. Only 4 have the wonky surround on them. They all will eventually get that added - some going up and some going down. It is a bright and cheerful neighborhood - which just needs some red, maroon and yellows added I think. A neutral one or two might get added as well.

It has been a busy week.

Monday was spent clearing the kids play room out to become my office... and move some things out of my sewing area and into that new office space.
Tuesday was back to school for the kids and to work for me while they were at school. That night - we split up and Greg took the kids to soccer practise and I hit the open house for Emily at school.
Wednesday - school/work and lots of homework... then I had a girl scout leader meeting that night.
Thursday -school/bowling for me, then the standard homework and a first soccer game. We lost 8 to 1... and Aidan played goal for the first half. A big net this year but he made some great saves. Not too shabby with only one practise for my kids (we had an open house for the other kid the first practise day).
Friday - school/work - clean the house up a bit and then make dinner and a Skype call with Grammy and Grandpa R... and Uncle David and Aunt Donna stopped in right before we got off the Skype call with my parents. The kids got to say hi to both (last saw them in July when we were up in VT) before we threw them into bed (late night Thursday so tried to get them in bed 7:45 last night. Didn't do too bad.
Saturday morning - Emily has a bowling meeting then her first day of bowling on a league for kids. Aidan will head to a new boy scout troop with his Dad to check it out. This afternoon Grandpa A will come for his weekly visit and then..... I hope to till the garden space and then sew! Oh, I told the kids after they clean the guinea pig cage and vacuum up the living room I'll get the other box of fall decorations out for them to finish transforming the house!
Sunday - will become Grandma day for the kids. Greg asked when she wanted them that day and she said early.... somehow 5AM came up! I'd be happy to get up at 4 to pop the kids in the car at 4:15 to get to her house for 5AM....Think she was serious???????

RSC Saturday in Pink...

Thank goodness we had this last weekend in July so I could finish up my pinks this week. I did get a little sewing and prep time and got my 5 houses sewn up.

I also got out all my birds in the air blocks and determined what I have left to make.

There were 6 pink ones that needed to be created and I was able to make them and cross pink off the list. Just need to add some in brown (I missed making any in Feb), black/grey, yellow and light/bright green. Who knows... I may have some time Saturday afternoon after running a girl scout recruiting booth for a few hours to get a little more sewing in. Maybe the bright and light green... since those fabrics are near the top of the scrap bins....

Linking up with the RSC Challenge on Saturday morning. I do wonder what color will be selected for August... I am hoping for one of the colors I have remaining for the BITA blocks..... =).
