My singer sewing machine... and a recipe.

I figured I'd finally pop open the sewing machine that is sitting in our reading room as a table. This belonged to my maternal grandmother and I am glad it came home with me when we cleaned out my grandfathers house after he moved into a nursing home.

It turns out I have a Singer sewing machine - with an electric foot pedal but also has a treadle on the bottom that does move back and forth. The model is a 306W. I found most of the instruction book except pages 1-4 and anything after page 53. I have a box of attachments in a little green box as well.

I'd love to try and get this threaded and oiled and see if it will run. Any thoughts?

Pumpkin Bars.
4 eggs
1 and 2/3 cups sugar
1 cup oil
1 - 16 oz can pumpkin
2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda

Mix eggs, sugar, oil and pumpkin until fluffy. Stir together four, powder, cinnamon, salt and soda. Add to pumpkin mixture and mix well. Pour into ungreased pan 15x10x1 inch. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 - 30 minutes (I used a 9x13 pan and it took 45 minutes - I'm going to try them as muffins next time!).

Cream cheese frosting
1/2 cup soft butter
1 3oz package of cream cheese
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups confectioners sugar

Beat butter, cheese and vanilla until blended. Add sugar and mix well. Spread on cooled pumpkin bars.

Good luck with your machine - do you have an older sewing machine repair guy around? I'd also search the internet - hopefully you can find the missing pages of your manual. Thanks for the recipe - I'll be trying this one of these days! ~Jeanne

I have a slightly different version of the 306 - mine is black. I bought it because it can do zig-zag, it's really heavy duty (and HEAVY!) and can be treadled or used with a motor. I haven't used it in a long time, but I remember one problem with it is the bobbin access is kind of a pain. I also have vague memories that the bobbin case and bobbins are a little difficult to find, so make sure you have those! It shouldn't be hard to find a manual online. There's a Yahoo group dedicated to vintage Singer sewing machines and they are a great resource. Love seeing your vintage baby! Oh, and thanks for the pumpkin bar recipe - I've been craving something pumpkin (I have an great recipe for pumpkin bread/muffins), but the cream cheese icing sounds wonderful!

How exciting! I think you can download the instruction manuals from the Singer website.
Loved seeing the photos of your machine. And to think this belonged to your grandmother...how wonderful! Enjoy!

I love that you have your grandmother's machine! I don't know too much about this machine but I think it is fabulous that you can use treadle power or electricity!

Thanks for recipe...you say next time you will make them as muffins. Did it turn out more like a muffin...I think I would like that too.

Oh my, I love it!! I hope you get it ready to sew! Look for the serial number on it and go to the Singer website, type it in and it will tell you the exact date that it was made. The serial number on that one may be on the bottom. I liked to have never found it on that Singer 404 that I bought the other day.
