Finished Graduation Quilt!

I finished the binding on the graduation quilt on Sunday evening. Saturday Emily pretty much made the pillowcase - I just did the cutting and stitching 3 seams. She did the pinning and ironing and followed the youtube video that we used to make the girl scout pillowcase. She picked the fabrics too. I hear we need a purple ribbon to tie the pillowcase closed for gifting since that is the one color I did not get into the quilt for her.

A pretty light teal polka dot fabric on the back. Time to throw it into the washer and dry it. Then sign it once Emily gets home from Camp Invention today. We'll fold it up and place into the pillowcase for gifting on June 23 up in Vermont.

Monday - Graduation quilt almost done!

Sarah's Graduation Quilt - Spinning Pinwheels

I decided to play with the walking foot and just did an X through the alternate blocks with the four little squares along the HST's. Using the warm and natural batting off my roll (I finished the last one and got to open the new one I got back around Christmas!) it does not need a lot of quilting thank goodness!
I did an easy rounded line around the first teal border, two straight lines through the second dark blue border and then a very large rounded line around the last big flowered border. The dark blue binding is attached to the front and just needs to get turned and hand stitched to the backing. Two needle breaks..... all pieces found and disposed of. Those were the mandatory back away from the machine and take a break times. Not bad for a rainy Sunday.

I had a good helper yesterday  - Emily helped me roll onto the boards, pin and un pin and she pressed the binding for me. I told her that I'll put her name on the label too as a maker of the quilt!

The boy did get time with Mom too... we played scrabble last night. I thanked him for letting me win!

Grandma is taking the kids today to Easy Street after lunch out. That should keep them entertained and out of my hair for a few hours today. They have mini golf, go carts (Emily is not tall enough to drive yet), arcade games, batting cage and a new laser room to try and navigate through.

OMG for April

Well, there are a few hours left to the last day of this month and I 'might' find some time to get back to the sewing room later and maybe add the borders to my graduation quilt. I have all the blocks made and sewn together so I am calling that a big win. It will be a top by Thursday when I have plans to pin it for quilting this coming weekend.

Friday......

I had company yesterday - the boy was home sick with whatever Dad had earlier this week. He is home again today. Achey and blah - flu bug that is going around hubby's work and through their kids. Sounds like 5-6 days of iciness in store. Hopefully just the boys get this one - Emily and I don't want or need it!

I had yesterday off so got some quality sewing time in and got almost all my block made for the graduation quilt. 2 more to go and then I can assemble them this weekend. This is Spinning Pinwheels pattern. A big shout out to Dot for the help with the pattern.

Ollie promptly decided to sit on the quilt.

Monday progress....

Why does it seem like so little progress from yesterday? I finished making 72 half square triangles in white and blue. Then I trimmed all of them (72+72) to be 3 inches. Yup - that took forever! Then it was sewing them together and I still need to press those units. I had a few more minutes before the roast was ready... so I cut my 6 strips each of white and teal and sewed them together.  Of course I ran out of bobbin thread half way through so that got a clean out and rewind as well. (OMG - the roast came out awesome! I got a 6.3 pound choice rib roast - aka prime rib at Aldi for $5.42 a pound Saturday. It was marked down with $10 off at register to move it and with a 15 minute start on high 450 then 325 for 2 hours and yummy, yummy, yummy)

I just have to press the hst units, then press and cut the strips and then sew them all together to make my 18 blocks. Then the other block should go quickly as there is no HST's to make or trim down. My goal is still to get this top completed - either as a top or quilted too by the end of the month - but we are halfway gone so I'm really shooting for the top completed. I do have all of May to quilt it!

OMG for April....

My One Monthly Goal for April is to get my requested graduation quilt - Spinning Pinwheels - to a top stage. This one is due in mid June... and I would love to have it completed this month too, but will be happy with a top! I am making the twin size to go off to college with my niece Sarah. I had a little break for a couple of years after six years in a row needing a high school graduation quilt from Aunt Deb. The first 5 are here. The 6th one is here.  I have already asked the next graduate (another niece is a junior this year and will need a graduation quilt next June) to start thinking of her quilt colors and/or pattern and to let me know by this fall.
