Table Scrap Challenge - February

The Table Scrap Challenge for February was red and hearts! I had some mistake blocks that I managed to turn into a few hearts!

I finally spent a little time and found a back and some leftover batting and got it machine quilted yesterday. I thought these fun polka dots from my mystery box a couple of years ago was perfect for this. Some red snowflakes for the binding that was hand stitched down last night.

Hanging in the entryway!

2023 ABC Table Scraps Challenge.

The prompt for February is M/V and pink. I decided to use up my scrap strips leftover from Emily's quilt, to make a few placemats this month. These are number 13 on my Winter 2023 UFO challenge. Love checking two items off the list.

Emily's quilt was finished in 2019.

The leftovers.

There are pink bits in these fabrics, including the heart for Valentines day that was gifted to me years ago from my friend Moneik! I played with some straight line quilting on these and then attempted to machine stitch the binding on all three. It is a learning process and I'm happy to say, I'm getting a little better at it!

I'll link up to the 2023 ABC Table Scrap Challenge later this month.

RSC in pink.

I had an extra set of the wing pieces already cut for the kites, so I pulled a couple of darker pinks (I only have 2 or 3 darker pinks in the stash???) to make one of the kites for the month. It joined the 2 darker blues from last month. I guess I am using some leftover backing fabrics with grey and snowflakes for this set of blocks.

I pulled out these strips which are extra's from a quilt I made for Emily. I also found a heart gifted to me from my friend Moneik. Somehow these two things will be worked into the ABC (table) scrap Challenge Joy hosts this month with the prompt letters of M and V! It also will check off my Winter UFO #13 to get these scraps into something usable and out of the sewing room! (Don't you love how I keep combining challenges?) There is pink in here too - to hit that Pink checkbox!

While sewing up the kites, I added some more pink flying geese from the parts leftover from Sweet Confetti. I know that had 96 colored fabrics - so there should be 10 pieces in each color with 6 for the last one. I'll have to check the quilt, but I think purple was the six.... so, there should be 4 more somewhere in a basket on the sewing table. These are using a white dot print that I seem to always have in the sewing room for the wings.

Linking up Saturday with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. Looks like I just have horses with Emily on Saturday morning. Grandma is taking Aidan out for lunch and shopping for his 15th birthday on Monday! Where has the time gone? His birthday wish is another year subscription to F1. He sure has gotten his money's worth from last year's subscription. We watched a race from 2021 Thursday evening after they had a late dinner.

November Table Scrap Challenge

I went into the sewing room planning to finish off the black star block. Alas, I left the black fabrics on the cutting table 3 weeks ago and 'someone' showed his displeasure with my lack of sewing time this month on it. It has now been through the wash twice and dried... so I cut and made the brown star block I needed.

While there, I had these bits of Kansas Troubles fabrics on the cutting board, so I sewed them together and got this 6 x 6.5 inch little mug rug. Instead of a binding, I did the easy turn method.

Emily got me this mug for Christmas a couple of years ago.

RSC in green

Part of the RSC is the Table Scrap Challenge. This month squares were added to the color of dark green. I had all kinds of ideas, alas my supply of green scraps was tossed last year and there were few scraps left in that color range. I was thinking of making a shamrock runner using squares and triangles. Not enough scraps in the colors I wanted. Another idea was four patches surrounded to make a square.

When I looked around and pulled the little bits of dark green I found these squares that I pulled off the hand pieced trip quilt from a few years ago.

I spent Thursday morning unpicking all 4 sets and then ironed the 2.5 inch squares to be flat. I managed to reuse them in a couple of ways! I made a few 16 patch blocks to add to the pile.

Then with the rest I made this place mat! It feels good to have those extra bits of fabric repurposed into something usable.

I decided to do some straight line quilting through the squares. I used some brown for the binding.

The back is a sage green light print. It measures 18x12 for a small placemat. Linking up with the Table Scrap Challenge and the RSC Challenge on Saturday.

I still need to make the crossed canoe blocks so it is a good thing we sill have a few mores days of May!

I guess they don't do 8th grade graduation down here in Florida but Greg and I thought we should recognize it so we got Aidan a cake on his last day of Middle School Thursday. The last day of school was Hat day... and his robotics team of 3 decided to wear their purple cowboy hats from the tournament in February. He actually wore it all day long... and his 3 block teachers got a kick out of it. His gifted teacher said  - 'a quiet kid for 3 years and then the last day of school wears a light up purple cowboy hat!', Robotics teacher just smiled when they all wore it in his class, his science teacher had 2 of them in class and asked what the light up purple hats were about so they explained it. It was a good day and it only took 7 minutes in the car ride home to start worrying about High School!

Tonight - the dog managed to get into the chicken run! Emily was a little traumatized and got Maple - a barred rock chicken out of his mouth and got Bear out and into the house. Lily  - the one who plays a parrot on our shoulder was hurt under the coop. We put her in the safety of the coop and will see how she does. We think she has a leg injury but will check on her in a few hours. The others (Molly, Poppy, Myrtle, DC and Rosie) seem ok physically. I guess the new fencing to go around the coop is first on the list tomorrow morning. Maple seemed ok - was eating seed out of Emily's hand and getting around the run ok after an hour. **Update this morning. Maple seems fine but Lily is still in the coop laying down.
Never a dull moment at my house.

Weekend...

I have no clue where the week went! I know I have been concentrating on hand stitching the hexagons together and have half the quilt together. Not sure if the other half will get finished this month or not. We will see how the beginning of this week goes I guess.  I'll keep concentrating on hand stitching the hexagons together. This half is 88x34. The front and the back.

I did take a break and thought about the Table Scrap Challenge mid week. Thursday I had all these ideas running through my head - yellow dreseden plates made into a sunflower runner, maybe some tulips in red and yellow.... alas... time got to me (and I don't know where I put the Quilters Patch book where I was going to pull the flower patterns from!) and as I was looking for things I found this set of 4 blocks with some yellow... and flowers .... the two prompts for March! I put them together and did some quilting and finished hand stitching the binding on it this morning! My entry for the March Table Scrap Challenge. I believe this is the Tiffany's magic stars pattern found on Joyful's blog.

Thursday evening was shopping for the troop sleep in at the church we meet at. Friday to Saturday around noon was the troop sleepover. Let's just say not much sleep was had but it was great to see all 6 girls together having fun. They baked a cake, got to experience plan B ( it rained all day Thursday and I could not get the camp fire started!) of making smores in the microwave. Pancakes and sausage for breakfast. They did a great job cleaning up and then while waiting for their rides were sitting outside in the shade playing a game of UNO. Me.... took a long nap Saturday afternoon! Then Aidan tried warming up pizza for dinner and the microwave decided it was done. Greg and I headed to Lowes to pick up a new one and got a counter one rather than the over the stove.... which meant I needed to clear off a counter, find where to put stuff (yes, Joy, I will be getting rid of things!). We will replace the old microwave with a range hood we think.... or just remove it and add pop up lights under the cabinet? Not sure yet. No way to vent it outside so still considering.... knowing they will probably be taking our house and property for a road project expansion in the next few years we really don't want to invest a lot of $ into it.

I also found the remaining butterfly wings that need to get appliqued down to their background this year. The yellow for March and the Pink for April with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. I am a bit behind with this challenge this year but scraps are very forgiving and will wait patiently for next year's turn at them. I am sew glad I decided to use a big safety pin to keep these all attached!

After a long overdue clean of the house today... I will be in the sewing room prepping the last of the Memory quilt blocks with interfacing so I can begin stitching that very large quilt together. Once that quilt is finished I think I will become much more productive in the sewing room.

February 2022 Table Scrap Challenge

Well, with a Teal and Improv prompt for the monthly challenge - this is about as improv as I get! A strip of teal scraps sewn together and I played a bit with the quilting and did more than I normally do. A wavy line in the teals - to attempt to simulate water/waves. I went with straight lines on one side and a mix of straight and wavy lines on the other side.

I pulled this fun teal print for the backing.

I had some teal with white dots print that worked for the binding.

The finished topper.

A long weekend (thank goodness!)

I seem to live in my car lately and yet, the hand stitching is not making much progress. I am getting higher in a few of the games on my phone, though!

I found this little stack of nine patches in the drawer so added a couple of teals to the pile. These were using 2 inch squares.

I was playing with teal for the improv prompt of the table scrap challenge yesterday. I had this and then the other pile turned into the start of a placemat.

I added a grey to each side. Not sure I am completely happy with it. It might get some creative quilting on it or it might change completely between now and next Saturday!

I did prep a slew of the needed hexagons Thursday and got the purples and oranges stitched up. The orange just needs to get into the group of 4 still. I was waiting on pins for the 4 yellow ones but I should have them back in the tin after the ones stitched up yesterday. These should keep me busy for the hand stitching department. My 'hope' it to really concentrate on the memory quilt this weekend and make progress. It has been sitting way too long with me being nervous making it. So I'll institute the 'just do it already' mantra and work on it a bit Saturday, Sunday and Monday in between Robotics prep, cookie booths and anything else my kids come up with - oh yea - I need to figure out how to use the big telescope for next weeks girl scout meeting.

On the way home from the second kid pick up on Tuesday night I pulled over and snapped a few photo's of the sunset. Earlier we were driving through an area with trees and the big ball of sun was making it look like they were on fire! (At least that is what Aidan said and seemed a little leery as I kept driving!)

It was a truly beautiful sunset and the photos do not do the sky justice.

Another shot was of this guy in the back yard on Thursday afternoon. The chickens were making a ruckus so I went out and this guy flew right past me and landed on the fence. I managed to get a photo before he took off and away from the yard.

Linking up Saturday with the RSC where we are playing with teal/aqua and Sunday with the Slow Sunday Stitchers.

With a busy week - lets see what happened for dinners.
Monday - leftovers from the Superbowl snacking and a ham and cheese quiche.
Tuesday - corned beef and cabbage. I used my pressure cooker for the cabbage as I loved it cooked that way growing up. Seems Emily is my kid as between the two of us we nearly ate all of what I had cooked for cabbage that night!
Wednesday - I got the beef stroganoff started and left it at the point of adding the sour cream. I texted Greg and Emily when I left school (20-40 min away depending on traffic) and they had the pasta ready and the stroganoff finished when we walked in the door.
Thursday - both kids were late pickup (advanced band practice and robotics) so they all got Sushi (California Rolls) from Sams. Yuck! I had leftovers.
I 'think' the horse evaluation team advanced from last weekends competition.... so I have a feeling there will be more practices for that in the future again.

Slow stitching Sunday

Today I'll be working on stitching these QAYG hexagons together by hand. I have them all into sets of 8 from last nights stitching. I'll make them into rows of 16 today and then start stitching the 3 rows together. This is section 3 of 8 for this quilt.  It measures 22x34 at the longest points.

The first 2 sections.

I was visiting blogs and saw the cutest snowman wall hanging on Pinker N Pumpkin Quilting & Stitching yesterday. I hope she does not mind but I ran into the sewing room and grabbed some red and extra white and began stitching this up. My guess on sizes was a little off but I'm making it work!

After some hand stitching last night it was to this point. I tried using my applipops for the circles. Lets just say someone needs more practice... but my snowman is not about perfection as he might be melting down here in Florida.

Ollie (I know it looks like Peanut but he is about 3 pounds heavier than his brother!)

I'll be adding eyes to him today and then will have to think about getting him finished off for Saturday's link up for the 2022 Table Scraps Challenge - where red is the RSC color and snowman was the theme for the month.

Linking up with the Slow Sunday Stitchers.

Yesterday we lost another Chicken, to a raccoon this time. Fred was a favorite of everyone - she was one of the original pack and had a bit of white on her so I could always tell her apart from the others. So far we lost Emma and now Fred. Rosie had not put herself to bed last night like the others so Emily was headed out to shoo her in when she spotted the Raccoon about to pounce on her. She scared off the raccoon and we got Rosie tucked into the coop and secure for the night.  They will not be happy today as I think we will keep them in the run until we can capture the raccoon and rehome it far, far away from the house. We normally have their door to the run open so they can go into the fenced in back yard (almost an acre) and wander around all day.

Table Scraps Challenge for November...

I checked Joy's blog this morning and yup - as it is the last weekend of the month it is time for the table scraps challenge link up!

I had played with my crossed canoe die earlier this month thinking it would make a cute table runner. I still think that.... but maybe next month!

I was cleaning off the sewing table/cutting mat area and found a stack of these leftover scraps from my 5 inch charms I used to make my applique hearts.

I had sewed 4 together to get a middle piece that was usable. Well, those got pressed and cut into 6 - 4.5 inch squares and there are 3 - 4 inch ones still to 'process'. I had some leftover 1.5 inch black ends of strips from the Snowman quilt I just finished.  That worked to attach them together. I didn't have enough to go around the outside. I decided to just finish it off with a little machine quilting. I pulled 2 little strips of leftover purple bindings in slightly different shades that got spliced together and finished this off with about 4 inches left over.  I'd say this truly is a 'scrap buster'! If you look close at the bottom you can see the 2 different color purple bindings =).

Saturday RSC in bright green

I just finished off this green placemat. It has become my 'go to' when I don't know what to make. Using 2.5 inch strips it makes a nice colorful addition to the table.

While I was in the sewing room I added a few green periods for my Full Stop.... and at the end I added the ... as this will be at the end of the quilt. I used 2.5 inch squares and used 5 inches between the periods and 2.5 inch white squares between the ...

Linking up with the RSC and The Table Scraps Challenge. I have had the windows of the house open all afternoon and I am enjoying the cooler weather that finally arrived in Florida. Almost time to close up the front windows for the night.

Orange...

I realized it was the last weekend of September! Yikes... I had not made a table topper yet! What to do...... I grabbed some 2.5 inch strips of orange and stitched them together. I dug into the black pile as I knew I had something halloweeny.... yes, I'm declaring that a word.... and could not find the pumpkins but did find the candy corns and the green bats. I went with the candy corn for the backing and the binding on this one. Some quilting along the lines.

After a couple of shows while Peanut was laying on this on my lap (try to stitch binding while that was going on!)... I evicted him and managed to get it stitched down. He is now laying on my arm and chest as I write this post...spoiled cat!

The completed table topper - a placemat. It is about 16x14.

I also added a couple of these blocks in orange. I see I am missing greens and red.... and I only made one dark blue and one teal. Each block is 16 inches so this should be a nice size with another 4 blocks added.

I hope to add the garden path blocks tomorrow and an orange butterfly as well. I am on tap to bring the girl to horses then hubby gets to help her give the chickens a bath. We are down to 8.... one died of natural causes the week before last - RIP Emma the chicken.
