OMG - September finish!

Just in the nick of time too! This 50x60 nine patch quilt was so happy to be finished off tonight. I think I made the blocks in the late 90's. Of course, I did have to wait for Peanut to move from his snuggled in spot so I could finish that last bit of binding.

Snowmen and Silent Night Sew Along

Jacquelynne Steves from The Art of Home is having a quick 4 week sew along for a cute wall hanging. I went the easy route this year in hopes of actually starting and completing it - and purchased the 4 snowmen center panels. I also got the labels and the little hearts. There are a bunch of labels so I am actually going to use them for a few quilts! This is the first block. Head on over to her blog and sign up for the sew along and she will e-mail you the patterns.

Slow stitching Sunday

Yesterday while Emily was riding I managed to prep a bunch of the orange hexagons with their pins for stitching. These got stitched last night and I just need to add a quilting stitch around each side before moving onto the next stack that are prepped and ready to stitch.

I'll be stitching the binding onto the nine patch quilt today. This one is my OMG for September so I have a few days left to get this one completed.

Orange...

I realized it was the last weekend of September! Yikes... I had not made a table topper yet! What to do...... I grabbed some 2.5 inch strips of orange and stitched them together. I dug into the black pile as I knew I had something halloweeny.... yes, I'm declaring that a word.... and could not find the pumpkins but did find the candy corns and the green bats. I went with the candy corn for the backing and the binding on this one. Some quilting along the lines.

After a couple of shows while Peanut was laying on this on my lap (try to stitch binding while that was going on!)... I evicted him and managed to get it stitched down. He is now laying on my arm and chest as I write this post...spoiled cat!

The completed table topper - a placemat. It is about 16x14.

I also added a couple of these blocks in orange. I see I am missing greens and red.... and I only made one dark blue and one teal. Each block is 16 inches so this should be a nice size with another 4 blocks added.

I hope to add the garden path blocks tomorrow and an orange butterfly as well. I am on tap to bring the girl to horses then hubby gets to help her give the chickens a bath. We are down to 8.... one died of natural causes the week before last - RIP Emma the chicken.

Churn Dash Finish!

These churn dash blocks got finished into this lap quilt with a teal border for my niece and her husband. The backing is a pretty grey snowflake pattern from Connecting Threads. I finished hand stitching the binding down during a meeting this morning. I just need to give it a wash and then I can mail it off to it's new owners. Another quilt completed off my Summer UFO list. I'll link this up on Saturday to the RSC... since I created two quilts with the churn dashes I had made in 2014 with the RSC. The other quilt was finished in 2018 and shipped off to Little Lambs. Here is a photo of that one.

Slow Stitching Sunday

I did add a few sets of 4 hexagons to the pile while at horses on Saturday. I need to prep more orange for this month and I have a bunch of light blues waiting to be stitched together into sets of four.

The rest of the day was spent trimming up the nine patch quilt and machine quilting the churn dash. That one got trimmed as well and then bindings were made.  Sunday I'll machine stitch the bindings to the top and start working on hand stitching them to the back.

The nine patches got a straight line through the nine patches and setting blocks. The churn dash got a curvy line about every 3 inches or so from top to bottom.  Linking up with Kathy and the Slow Sunday Stitchers. That purple binding.... might have gotten one section stitched 5 times before I got it right. Sigh... so much easier to make binding with a print with right and wrong sides. I managed to turn it wrong and then kept at it. The teal one went together perfectly! Now I have about 480 inches of binding to stitch. The churn dash will be first as I try and rest my foot by not being up on it most of the day like Saturday. I seemed to have pulled my achilles tendon in my left leg late Monday afternoon. I babied it Tuesday (laptop at work so I was able to work from bed with my foot elevated). Overdid it on Thursday so worked from the bed Friday afternoon as well. Let's just say... I know I was on my foot way too much Saturday - between horses, quilting and pressing, taking Em to the mall for leggings for her concert and then cooking off some southwestern egg rolls for dinner. Em took pity on me and put out the fall/halloween decorations and dusted for me.... so I could watch Hocus Pocus for the first time this fall.

I snapped this after dropping the kids to school Thursday when it was foggy. Directly across the middle school is a big field the vet uses for horses. I think he is a breeder as there is usually horses with their foals in there. I think there were about 15-20 in there that day. A nice view of horses we get every school day at drop off and pick up. Sorry it is so distant.... I didn't have time to zoom in before I had to pull onto the road so it was a quick snap.

Quilting and pinning....

After dropping the kids to school it was a quick breakfast then some weeding in the front beds. A quick shower and then this was happening as I attempted to start quilting the nine patch quilt.

I managed to move him and get a few of the diagonal lines stitched before he decided to lay on the quilt! It was a good time to run hubby to Lowes to pick up a few things.  I managed to get the rest of the quilt quilted.... and only had to move the cat 3 more times. I just tugged the quilt with him on it the rest of the time. Yes, I did have the door closed to that room but someone figured out how to turn the knob and managed to get in!

Wonky mismatched seams and all! It adds to the charm... that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I love the polka dot backing from Connecting Threads.

Then I laid out the snowflake backing and cut that to size. The cats decided to have a wrestling match on the quilt at that point. Peanut and Ollie.  That lead to some pressing of the backing and the top again. I was able to distract them and laid it all out with the batting I had cut last night. I'm happy to say this one is now pinned and draped over the cutting board. I hope to get it quilted with some wavy lines this evening.

I need to trim the nine patch quilt and make some bindings for both of them. I plan to use the same teal for the churn dash but I'll take a look and see what fabrics I have for the nine patch. I'm thinking purple but we will see if I can find enough to bind it. All in all a very productive day.
