2014 - Hexie time

This is the year of hexie's for me. I found this website a long time ago where I can print out hexie papers at 1 inch per side. I saved off the PDF onto my computer so I will always have it. Now to cut them out and prep some fabrics. I cut a few out last night and think I need to make them a bit bigger. Any tips for me?

I am not sure exactly what they will turn into but with a bunch of doctor appointments already scheduled for this month I am sure to have plenty of wait time for these and finishing up some orange peels for the border on one of last years RSC quilts.

Cute fabric! I think I am going to make hexies this year too but I will just trace them directly onto the fabric.

I need to get back to sewing my hexie's. I stalled out this fall when my rubic star wasn't going together as planned. I have a bunch of 1" hexie's in a container that just need to be sewn into rows. Time to get them back out and work on them.

What adorable fabrics!! I use 1" hexies from www.paperpieces.com where they recommended using 2 1/2" squares ... I cut mine a thread or two generously (since I do a lot of basting in the car). After basting, I just trim off the corners - nice mindless activity for the evenings. I know some who just lop off the corners before basting. Since I had a ton of 2 1/2" strips, I just subcut them into squares and started basting. I can't wait to see your progress!

I use the templates from this site:http://cadouri-din-inima.blogspot.com/2013/01/tips-for-cutting-hexagon-templates.html I also use heavier paper like card stock or report covers. I punch a hole in them so that I can pin them to the fabric and then baste around them. Geta's templates are nice cause they can be cut with an old rotary cutterblade and a ruler. Fast and easy. I then make a template that includes the 1/4 inch seam. Cut strips that wide cut into squares and lay the template on top to cut off the corners. I do several at a time as this does not need to be accurate. Have fun with them, I know that I am.

I haven't tried hexies yet. I'll stay tuned for any tips in case I get bitten by the hexie bug too. I love the fabrics you're starting with.
